Infection and inflammation of the eye can negatively affect vision. Our research focuses on developing more effective therapeutic strategies to treat blinding eye infections. We seek to identify important virulence factors of bacteria involved in ocular infections, as well as essential elements of the host immune response which may be involved in damaging ocular inflammation during infection. Our overarching goals are to (1) identify more potent antibiotics which quickly sterilize the eye, (2) devise and test more effective anti-inflammatory agents which target pathways important to influx of inflammatory cells and proinflammatory mediators, and (3) neutralize bacterial toxins which damage intraocular tissue. Accomplishing these goals will foster new therapeutic strategies which improve the visual outcome of patients suffering from these blinding infections.
